A New York Times story, "Signs of Ethnic Attacks in Georgia Conflict," cites Human Rights Watch as saying it has "documented attacks by ethnic Ossetians in and around Tskhinvali." Yet the HRW press release on its report from Georgia also noted the "plight of ethnic Ossetian villagers who had fled Georgian soldiers"—a plight not mentioned by the Times. [more]
Poland signs US "missile shield" deal; Russia pledges "punishment"
Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy chief of the Russian general staff, responded angrily to Poland's deal with the US to host a "missile shield" base, saying "A bordering country always makes it its priority to strike such installations [in case of conflict]. So...it cannot go unpunished from the point of view of [its] military use." [more]
